Apartheid Museum

This week end was a Joburg week end with Victoria flying over. This time we rented a car so we can visit a bit more of Joburg. Plan was to visit the famous Apartheid Museum which relates the whole history of the Apartheid, starting with the British colonies, the gold mining rush and the evolution of the political parties which eventually led to the apartheid. It ends with Mandela liberation and the end of apartheid in 1994.

It is extremely detailed and well documented, mixing photos, interviews and films. I guess the general learning for me was that there were in fact a many external factors which led to apartheid. It started with different communities leaving on their own and eventually built up over years to create this terrible system. Some examples of its implementation are ignored by most people (like the forced relocation – organised by the government – of millions of people from their homes to more rural areas) and it is easy to understand why the country is still trying to recover from such awful times.
